The blog post isn´t really new, but just found some really nice words on the “History of the Internet” on the blog of John Nack — Thanks

Melih Bilgil’s The History of the Internet tells, well, you know, using minimal lines but loads of attention to detail. (The fly-over of Cuba is terrific.) Adobe designer Ethan Eismann writes, “My new personal mission in life is to bring this level or higher of engaging instruction to an Adobe welcome screen near you.”

PICOL for Visio

David Carswell contributed a Microsoft Visio 2007 stencil incorporating the PICOL SVG iconset (090316). This stencil is an import of the SVG icons, with aspect-ratio protection applied, and is released under the same license as PICOL itself.

Announcing Pictodeck v1.0

Pictodeck is just what it sounds like — a deck of pictograms. It’s a collection of over 700 vector pictograms taken from four different sets: PICOL, Android Icons, Pictoico and Freshpixel. Aaron Richard, the creator of Pictodeck, has converted all of these sets and made them available for Keynote users.
Pictodeck is available for download on Aaron Richards website.

Advertising on the third screen in the fifth dimension

Here I found a nice presentation by Aaron Richard he made together with Freestyle Interactive, Heat, and Wieden + Kennedy on trends and innovation in mobile marketing.

»The purpose of this deck was to delve into advertising on the third screen (mobile) in this new fifth dimension—where data and information exists in a cloud all around you. This fifth dimension isn’t quite tangible without a device, but if you have an iPhone you can look at a restaurant through your phone and see every review that people left on Yelp or all the tweets tagged with that location.« Aaron Richard

Save the date – Quarks & Co Die Macht des Internets

For all the german readers of the PICOL Blog. On October 20th there will be a feature by the director Mike Schaefer in the show “Quarks & Co” on the TV channel WDR.
The episode is called “Die Macht des Internets”. The feature of Mike Schaefer uses parts of the animation “History of the Internet” and for this episode we developed two more takes, which show the Internet of today. In this feature Mike made an very interesting interview with Lawrence Roberts, who was chief scientist at the ARPA.

Fünf-Prozent-Hürde

This clip “Fünf-Prozent-Hürde” (five percent coinsurance clause) is an animation out of a series of three clips. It explains an aspect of the election system in Germany. Together with Astrid Reinberger we made these clips for the Bundeszentrale für polische Bildung (BPB). All clips were made with help of the PICOL signs.
Two other clips, with the title “Überhangmandate” and “Erst- und Zweitstimme” which are already produced, will follow soon. If you can´t wait to see them, you can watch all clips here on the website of the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung.

Making editable icons for Powerpoint

PowerPoint and OpenOffice support eps files, but changing the color of the icons isn´t possible with eps files. If you export your icon as *.emf (Enhanced Metafile) you are able to change the colors with PowerPoint, but you lose all your curves, if you look closely on your icon.

It took me some trials to convert the icons made with Illustrator to make them editable with PowerPoint. It takes a few steps, but it works. Now it´s possible to change the color of the icons with PowerPoint and OpenOffice.

If you work with Illustrator, you first have to save your icon as *.svg (Scalable Vector Graphics) file.
Then open your *.svg file with Inkscape.
With Inkscape you save the file as *.odg (OpenDocument Graphic)
Now you can open the file with OpenOffice and save it as *.ppt file to open it with power point.

If you want to spend time and money remove step 1 and 2

I hope this will help you. When I´ve a little more time I will update this post.
